Post Lockdown - Bike Hire in Murcia

Following the relaxation of the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions which now permits restricted cycling for sport and leisure purposes across Spain, there is hope things are moving in the right direction and a further relaxation will occur in due course.

From Monday of this week, Etiquette Cycling (and other cycling companies) have from its Los Alcazares, Murcia, base been able to resume its bike hire operations.  As such, we are determined to lead by example; Now is the time to implement the 'new normal’ with the focused aim of helping to protect both our bike hire customers and our team.

This article will initially reflect our pre Covid-19 bike hire approach relating specifically to customer engagements and our bike fleet management.  We will then introduce our newly adapted approach which aims to be ‘fit for purpose’ in this evolving new world.  The New Bike Hire Etiquette starts here.

Pre Covid-19 - Bike Hire Etiquette

Our pre Covid-19 bike hire approach was one where customer interaction was a key component.

Armed with roadworthy and pre-cleaned bike/s, we would arrive at a pre-agreed address, meet the new customer/s and so the process of customer face to face interaction would begin.  After the courtesy of a then normal handshake, the bikes/s would have been lifted down from the roof/back of our support car.  The team would on a one to one basis follow our then normal bike hire process which covered:

  • bike induction (including, handing over bike accessories)

  • bike set up assistance - helping with seat heights, pedals etc

  • managing the payment process - cash handover or use of payment card

  • offer advice in the form of an informal Q&A - safety, local knowledge and route advice

Hands up - The above in relation to social distancing and hygiene factors, seems in some instances a little out of touch with the new world.

Covid-19 - New Bike Hire Etiquette

Now to the new approach:

The Etiquette Cycling team have in essence, taken our pre-Covid-19 bike hire approach, alongside the evolving social distancing and hygiene rulebook to create our new approach which will provide:

Hire Bikes

  • Cleaning post hire - clean/disinfect each bike

  • A roadworthy check near a sterile storage area

  • Each bike will then be placed in the sterile storage (not removed until the day of its next hire)

  • Time of next hire - second roadworthy check undertaken (including tyre pressure)

  • Each bike will be set up to the customer’s pre-specified requirements

Bike Hire Delivery

  • Transporting bike to delivery - The team will wear gloves and masks when handling bike

  • Where more than 1 member of the team is present on a delivery (social distancing to apply between them)

  • Maintaining social distance on delivery at all times

  • Provision of surgical gloves will be given to each customer to use if required

Online Bike Hire Support

Pre-hire engagement:

  • Online payments only

  • Requirement for bike set up measurements

  • Communication of how the delivery will place - social distancing and hygiene factors

  • New cycling etiquette - we will communicate each hirer’s need for self sufficiency

  • Convey all current Spanish cycling restriction rules

  • Suggested routes - more circular - we are devising some new more local / circular routes
